This article tells the story of three vulnerable individuals: Paul Rivers, a critically ill mathematician who marries Emilia, an English immigrant without love; Christina Peck, a middle-class suburban housewife who marries happily and becomes the mother of two girls; and Jack Jordan, a former convict who finds that his faith in Christianity has the power to nurture his family. They are brought together by a violent accident that will change their lives. In the end, no one like them will learn the harsh truth about love, faith, courage, desire, and guilt, and the opportunity to change our world forever—forever.
